Discovering Our True IDENTITY / A Journey from Ego to the True Self
• God created you and respects the unique creation that you are ~ Psalm 139:13
• You are designed to be inherently in union with God. 2 Cor. 4:7
“False Self vs. True Self”
The process of being conformed into the image of God and all that means involves our individual journey from who we think we are to who we truly are in God; the “False Self vs. True Self”.
The “False Self” Starter Kit
This is a vast subject matter and is partly inspired by the book, Immortal Diamond by Richard Rohr who states…
“The False Self” is your “starter kit” life, having been formed by our childhood experiences, society, and is a reflection that is ego-driven.
What “False” Means
False, simply put, is what is not TRUE
Attach no defensiveness…The color of my shirt is purple. T or F?
“The True Self”
“The True Self” is our absolute identity, who we are in God, “the living branch connected to the living vine.”
The goal of this series is to bring to our consciousness (awareness) the life in God we are privileged and empowered to live here and now, growing beyond the egocentric “False Self” that is inherently needy and fragile moving into who you are in God & who God is in you!
What is the EGO?
• At birth we have no knowledge and no consciousness of self.
• Our 1st awareness is “other”
• As we grow we become aware of ourselves in contrast to “other.”
• This “awareness” is a reflected awareness.
Through appreciation, love, care, the child feels she is good, feels valued, feels some significance.
An “Ego” is Born
• This center is a reflected center.
• It is not the real being.
• The child does not know who she is; she simply knows what others think about her.
This is the ego: the reflection, what others think
If “other” thinks she has no value…
• No appreciation
• No smiles
• No affirmation…an ego is born: sad, rejected, like a wound; feeling inferior, worthless. This too is the ego. This too is a reflection.
Ego Related to Truth
The “real” is known in contrast to the false, so the ego is necessary.
One has to pass through it.
It is a discipline.
The real can be known only through the illusion.
The Difference Between our True Self and our Ego
Like the flower…
• A plastic flower is not a flower
–It cannot die (it was never alive)
• A real flower never dies
• A real flower reseeds
• A real flower dies and resurrects
• A Plastic Life
Assuming the reflected identity that others put on you as weak, powerless, of little worth, fractured, broken, not worth love
Who does God say you are?
• A Prison
• Ego is a false center
• Ego lives on attention
• Ego is a deep begging
• Ego is a slave to others
• Ego is the source of all misery
One’s own ego is hard to see. We are often blind to our ego while others can clearly see it.
Charlie Brown is Playing With Blocks. He’s making a house. He is sitting in the middle of the blocks building the walls. Then, he realizes he is enclosed; imprisoned in the walls he has built. Then he cries, “Help, help!” He has done the whole thing! Now he’s imprisoned.
True Self IS that real center is the soul, the true self, God & Truth living inside of you.
Our “True Self” is the reflection of God.
•2 Corinthians 4:6 God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
